What should I do if the toilet clogs, overflows, backs up, won’t drain?

If the toilet/commode has not flushed properly and/or the water level in the toilet is higher than normal, do not flush the toilet again. The toilet may overflow. If the toilet does overflow, please do not flush the toilet again. Clean up any water that may have overflowed.

There are two situations that may cause this issue:

  1. If multiple toilets are backing up in the house or water is backing up into showers, send us a Request through the Resident Center. Likely there is an issue with the sewer line.
  1. If only one toilet is backing up, generally, too much paper or another item has been put in the toilet, which may have blocked the toilet from draining. To unblock the toilet, a plunger is needed. We recommend an accordion style plunger, because it pushes more air through the sewer line.

If you cannot get the toilet flowing again, send us a Request through the Resident Center. Generally this issue is not a standard maintenance item, so a repair charge will be billed to your account.
