Why is the garbage disposal not working?

The garbage disposal may not work for several reasons:

  1. The garbage disposal is unplugged: The garbage disposal can be accidentally unplugged, while accessing items stored under the kitchen sink. The plug for the garbage disposal is generally located on the back wall, under the sink.  Plug the garbage disposal back into the outlet.
  2. The garbage disposal reset button has activated: The red reset button is generally located on the bottom or the front of the garbage disposal.  Push the red reset button, turn on water, and turn on garbage disposal to verify that problem has been resolved.
  3. The garbage disposal is not turning: If too much food or an inappropriate object enters the garbage disposal, the disposal will make a loud noise.  With continued use, the garbage disposal will stop turning and make a buzzing noise.  Submit a Request through the Resident Center. Generally, this issue is not a standard maintenance item, so a cost will be charged to your account.
