Why is the refrigerator or freezer not cooling properly? Why is there frost on the freezer walls?

The refrigerator or freezer may not work properly, if:

  1. Large amounts of warm items have been placed in the refrigerator or freezer. Allow 4 hours to cool the contents in the refrigerator or freezer.  Try to avoid placing warm or hot items in the refrigerator or freezer.
  1. The power to the refrigerator has been disconnected. Open the refrigerator to confirm that the refrigerator light turns on.  If the light does not come on, then the refrigerator may have lost power.  Review possible solutions in the power outage section.
  1. A door to the refrigerator or freezer has been left open for long periods of time or has not been securely closed. Check for frost on the freezer walls. If there is frost on the freezer walls, the freezer will need to be defrosted.

How to defrost the freezer

  1. Remove the contents of the refrigerator and  freezer and place in an ice chest.
  2. Once the contents are removed, roll the refrigerator forward to unplug it.
  3. Prop open both the refrigerator and freezer doors for 24 hours, with a towel in the bottom of each section to catch defrosting ice and water. The towels may need to be changed periodically if they are soaked to prevent water dripping, which could damage flooring or baseboards.
  4. After the 24 hours, WIPE ALL moisture from the freezer (look under shelves and drawers) and plug the refrigerator/freezer back in. If the moisture is not wiped out, the refrigerator will likely freeze up again, so this step is very important.
  5. After 8-12 hours, check the temperature of the refrigerator and freezer. If the refrigerator and freezer are cold, place the contents back in the refrigerator and freezer.

If the refrigerator/freezer still does not cool, submit a Request through the Resident Center.
