Why is the toilet running after its flushed?
It’s normal for the toilet/commode to run for a few minutes after each flush, to refill the tank with water. The mechanisms in the toilet tank control the amount of water and the length of time needed to fill the tank.
If the water in the toilet is running longer than normal, continuously, or without flushing, there could be a couple reasons:
- The chain that connects the toilet handle to the flapper could be broken or getting stuck. Check the chain that attaches the handle to the flapper at the bottom of the tank. If the chain is broken, send us a Request through the Resident Center. If the chain is getting stuck in the flapper, the chain may need to be shortened. The water in the toilet tank is clean water. The chain can be shortened, where the chain is attached to the flapper.
- If the chain is not causing the problem, please send us a Request through the Resident Center.
In the interim, turning off the water to the toilet will decrease water usage. To use the toilet, turn on the water to fill the water tank, use the toilet, flush the tank, and then turn off the water again.
